A monthlong CNN investigation discovered a ‘rape academy’, where men, shielded by internet-anonymity and uplifted by a ‘perverse camaraderie’, teach each other how to rape their wives without them noticing. The website, described as a ‘moral free file host where anything legal is hosted forever’, racked up 62 million views in the month of February alone. At the same time, the internet is full of clips in which men share how they physically prepare to beat the shit out of their girlfriends in case they dare to decline a marriage proposal. In both cases, the predators claim it’s all just fun and games (assumably to entertain other men) - as per usual.

At this point, unless a man positions himself loudly and proudly against rape culture, I have to interpret his silence as agreement. The men who say “not all men” are exactly a drop of oil on the wheels of the rape culture machine. The men who laugh off sexist jokes from their friends, but “would never harm anyone” - another drop of oil. The men who only seem to not view women as objects once you force them to imagine it’s their sister or their daughter being abused - a whole barrel of oil.

To me, there’s no difference between an active predator and someone who indulges in the privileges of keeping the systems that breed active predators alive.

And while women have been taught to fear the strange man lurking in a dark alley at 3am - when statistic have been proving over and over again that the most unsafe place for women and children is their own home - a significant amount of men have dropped $175 on a bottle of tasteless and odorless liquid. ‘Your wife won’t feel anything and won’t remember anything.’

The CNN investigation sheds the thousandth light on something we’ve been knowing for years: a patriarchal society breeds violent men, while telling women being in proximity to one violent man will protect them from the violence of other violent men. How much more light needs to be shed before everyone finally sees it clearly?
